Photos show why taking an Alaska cruise is worth it

It typically measures around 180 square feet, not including the balcony area. The takeaway here is that you'll have a tougher time locking down a balcony cabin on an older Royal Caribbean ship than on a newer vessel. If you're planning a cruise on one of the line's older vessels and a balcony cabin is a must, you'll want to book early to ensure you get one. The three-level main dining room, with its stunning chandelier, is located aft of the Royal Promenade on decks 3,4 and 5. Instead of the typical two set seating times, Icon will offer guests a choice of five, as well as flexible My Time Dining.

I thought it was the most relaxing area on the ship, so I enjoyed being close by. During my voyage, the ship sailed to Roatán, Honduras; Cozumel and Costa Maya in Mexico; and Royal Caribbean's private island in the Bahamas. Across from Adventure Ocean are Playmakers Sports Bar and Arcade, teen club Social020 and the Absolute Zero ice skating rink. Unfortunately, the ship was hosting private functions in that area and they were inaccessible to visitors. The Vitality Spa mostly has the soothing, neutral-colored look popular across the cruise industry.

You'll also want to plan your day around getting photos taken, so you can get the best value out of the cost. This sounds easy while you're still at home, but there's so much happening on a cruise, you'd be surprised how difficult it can be to muster the motivation to get everyone dressed and ready for photos every day. While you could certainly take your own photos, many guests enjoy the fun backdrops you can only find at the photo stations.

Providing copies in the app potentially saves time for guests, as they no longer need to go to the photo station to review photos. In testing on Wonder, Lovetocruise2002 reported guests would still need to go to the photo area if you had purchased a photo package. To get this perspective outside your bedroom window, you’d want to book a balcony stateroom on your Alaska cruise. Whether you’d like to lounge by the pool and watch glaciers go by, or try some fine dining, there’s a lot to enjoy on a Quantum Class ship. To show why cruisers love these itineraries so much, we asked readers on our Royal Caribbean Blog Facebook page to share the best Alaska cruise photos. The backstory here is that Royal Caribbean ships are designed to appeal to a wide demographic, including travelers with varying budgets.

Souvenir photos have long been a cornerstone of the cruise ship experience, where passengers pose in front of backdrops with the ship's photographer to possibly purchase a print or digital download later. Imagine sailing through these massive mountains while having access to all the accommodation, dining, activities, and entertainment onboard a cruise ship. Steve Cohen shared this photo of a cruise ship sailing by a snowy mountain. With an ocean-view cabin, you get a window looking out to the sea but not an attached balcony where you can sit outside and enjoy the fresh air. Your room will have four walls and no windows offering a glimpse of the outside world (at least, not a traditional window — more on that in a moment).

I booked a mid-tier room — a step above interior staterooms, which have no window. It's a category below staterooms with a balcony, and two steps below a suite. Most of the cabins on board were closed to visitors but we did get to see three suites. Royal Caribbean has been on a journey to create a cohesive suite area over the past few new-builds, and the idea has finally come together on Icon of the Seas. The multideck suite neighborhood on decks 16 through 19 creates a ship-within-a-ship experience with everything upscale travelers will need. Deck 15 is swimming central with Royal Bay — the biggest pool in the fleet — and the Cove Pool, nestled up against the side of the ship for sea views.

Growing up traveling around the world, she developed a passion for diversity and cross-cultural communication. From her first cruise on Wonder of the Seas, she has delighted in the intersection between travel, diversity, and writing in the cruising world. If you’re passionate about history or just want to learn more about Alaska's vibrant heritage, then there’s plenty for you to explore on an Alaskan cruise. Ruth Madewell submitted a photo of the White Pass and Yukon Railroad Train, a popular attraction in Skagway, Alaska. To save money, look for last-minute cruise deals in the shoulder season, starting in March or April. The best type of cabin for your cruise depends on what your travel preferences and needs are.

Restaurants include the Surfside Eatery buffet, where everyone can enjoy an easy meal, and Pier 7, an extra-fee (if you're over 12, that is) California-style restaurant, which also serves breakfast all day. TPG was able to explore the ship's five new neighborhoods — such as the young family-focused Surfside and the glass-domed AquaDome — and try some of the new onboard eateries. Matt started Royal Caribbean Blog in 2010 as a place to share his passion for all things Royal Caribbean with readers.

My room was a mid-tier cabin at the front of deck eight.

However, the top suites on its vessels offer an experience keeping with what you'll find on some of the world's top luxury ships. Each of these bigger ocean-view cabins has two twin beds that can convert into a royal king bed, one double sofa bed and either one Pullman bed and one twin bed or two Pullman beds. There are far fewer balcony cabins on older Royal Caribbean ships (and all older cruise ships in general).

Inside cabins on Symphony of the Seas measure just 149 square feet, quite a bit less than the typical ocean-view cabin on the vessel (those range from 179 to 272 square feet). The typical balcony cabin on Symphony of the Seas is 182 square feet, not including a 50-square-foot balcony. We'll give you a more in-depth report once we board the ship in just over a week for a three-night preview cruise. But here, to whet your appetite for the most-talked-about ship of the year, are photos of the public spaces and a few suites on Icon of the Seas.

Not only is there only one area on the ship to go to review photos, but the photo area becomes inundated with other guests on the final day who all want to see how their photos came out. Andrea Hancock shared this photo of kids looking out over a balcony at a marvelous view. Alaskan cruise season usually runs from April to October, with July and August being the most popular times. You do have a shorter sailing window when it comes to avoiding the extreme winter weather, so take advantage of a cruise to Alaska this summer.

Your Alaska itinerary will include at least one opportunity to see a majestic floating glacier. You’ll be able to find unique excursions, such as ziplining, train rides, rafting tours, glacier viewings, historic museums, and wildlife sanctuaries. Alaska is the perfect refreshing destination for hikers, nature lovers, or long-time cruisers looking for something new. Skagway is located north in Alaska’s Inside Passage and is packed full of tours involving Alaska’s gold rush history. The state-of-the-art ship has indoor pools, the SeaPlex, an indoor skydiving simulator, and countless other activities. To solve your problems, a cruise to Alaska provides the perfect opportunity to visit a cooler place.

You'll find Swim & Tonic, the first swim-up bar on a cruise ship, on Deck 16. One issue with the photo package is if you're traveling with a large group. While a photo package for a family staying in the same cabin makes sense, photo packages for groups spread across multiple rooms can make things quite pricey. So either your friends and family also buy a photo package, or only you come home with the printed memories.

All Royal Caribbean cabins come with this configuration, according to its website, so they may be separated for additional guests. The thermal suite offers saunas, aromatherapy showers and heated loungers. The Icon Loft Suite is a two-deck-high suite with a living area below and a master bedroom upstairs. El Loco Fresh serves up complimentary tacos and quesadillas, and the Lime and the Coconut (you'll find one on each of Chill Island's decks) quenches your thirst with cool and refreshing cocktails.

The Royal Promenade remains the Main Street of the ship, as it is on previous Royal Caribbean ships. But on Icon, it feels much more spacious, light-filled and airy thanks to walls of glass windows on both sides of the ship and the removal of cabins overlooking the thoroughfare. The main focal point is The Pearl, a walk-through sphere that is actually the structural support holding up the ship since the glass walls are located where most ships have a structural steel frame. The photo package will include any photo that you, or anyone else from your cabin, are in the photo. Meaning, as long as someone from your cabin is in the photo, it could be included in your photo package. If you have multiple cabins booked, you'd need another photo package for people in those cabins (unless someone from your cabin happens to be in their photo).
